Steps to Install Laminate Underlayment
- The underlayment comes with a plastic strip on one end that covers through the wall, underlying the baseboard, and the other end has a strip of adhesive tape. Post this; you need to run the underlayment next to the longest wall.
- Trade underlay fitters now peel back the covering of the adhesive tape on the first sheet and smooth the plastic edge of the second sheet down onto the tape of the first sheet. Continue this process around the room until they cover the floor, with only a small gap between the walls and the underlayment. Do not forget the remove the extra portions.
- Each board has a tongue and a groove side. The tongue side is the smaller that sticks out from the board. Cut off the tongue on the long side and short side when installing boards in the corners. It makes a better corner and gives a place to start work and build outward.

- Now attach the spacers. Ensure to protect the face and use a shorter piece when starting with the subsequent rows.
- Put the planks into place.

1. How to install an underlayment?
Answer: Install plywood underlayment on a dry subfloor. Inspect the subfloor for evenness along joints and flatness between joists. When necessary, sand the subfloor near joints, install extra blocking and re-fasten the subfloor to flatten uneven areas.
2. Do I need to nail down underlayment?
Answer: Yes, you need to nail down the underlayment. While nailing your underlayment, ensure using shorter nails. Lay the underlayment on the floor joints. Do not line up the underlayment seams and subfloor seams together. Stagger the underlayment at least a couple of inches with the subfloor seams.
3. What will happen if I do not use underlayment for laminate flooring?
Answer: If you do not install underlayment, your laminate flooring has a high chance of getting damaged or ruined. You need to install the underlayment on some floors for the warranty to be valid.
4. Do all laminate flooring need underlayment?
